Hmong Action Association works to increase involvement in election

Leaders of the Outagamie County Hmong community are helping friends and relatives register to vote and become involved in local elections. They recently talked with Jo about issues of importance to Hmong voters in particular and all residents of the 57th Assembly District. Several members of the Hmong community helped the Egelhoff for Assembly campaign in an early October city-wide literature drop.

“Madison is in a mess. The state is in a dire economic condition,” said Egelhoff, 58, who served on the Common Council from 1993 to 2003. She said she worked hard to represent her constituents “and I want to do the same thing in Madison.”

Egelhoff is the kind of leader we need in Madison

I was impressed with Jo Egelhoff some years ago when I served on the Appleton Common Council. At that time, the mayor asked some of the aldermen to meet with the citizens and help them with their problems and questions.

Egelhoff’s got it right about jobs

But what exactly is enough in taxes and spending? Wisconsin is in the top fourth of states in education spending and, at $6,157 per student, we spend 5 percent more per student than the next-highest-spending state in the Midwest, Minnesota, and 8½ percent more than the national average. In this past school year, per-pupil spending increased 4.2 percent, and total school costs increased 3 percent, according to the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance.

Egelhoff announces – running to succeed Steve Wieckert in the 57th

Well… there is a problem – a serious one. I’ve been frank in writing about it over and over. A pretty darn big disconnect in this state budget of ours. It’s a pocketbook issue – coming down to folks keeping what’s left of their paychecks – or… continuing to turn hard-earned dollars over to the government in increased taxes, fees and assessments.
